Raw Cacao, Maca Powder & Bee Pollen...Oh My!

Super foods seem to be all anyone can talk about at the moment, what powder is going into your smoothie, what super berry is being sprinkled on your muesli… but what’s the deal with super foods and what do they actually do??

Not all foods are created equal - some are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and other beneficial substances that they've been deemed 'super'.

They have incredible health benefits, packing a powerful nutritional punch that helps protect against cancer and heart disease, lower cholesterol, protect the organs from toxins and improve digestive health. Some nutritionists even say super foods can help you live longer. This makes sense if you are all about prevention. What if they can help you fight off disease and keep you ‘young’? You really have nothing to lose except maybe some $$$’s.

Overall, Super foods are the foods that give you 'more bang for your buck' in nutritional terms - they give you more nutrients without a lot of kilojoules, and let’s face it, make you feel really good about what you’re putting into your body!

We have compiled a short list of a few of the super foods that are being used at the moment, and what they are good for:

  • Chia seeds – Chia seeds are packed with omega fatty acids that increase healthy brain function. They are also high in protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals, iron, calcium and antioxidants!

  • Macca powder – Macca powder is known for its energy/ revitalising qualities and also hormone balance.

  • Goji Berries – These are known for their healing properties.. They have over 20 vitamins and minerals… and are deliciously sweet!

  • Cacao – Think chocolate in its raw form! Packed with antioxidants, it has a rich, bitter flavour that is simply delish!

  • Hemp protein – If you’re looking to add that extra bit of protein to your diet, this is what you need! Hemp protein can boost your protein content by up to 50% than other soy based protein products. It is also really high in fibre so great for your gut!

  • Coconut Oil/milk – Coconut oil has amazing fat fighting qualities. The fatty acids fight body fat by converting it into energy… this boosts your metabolism!

  • Flaxseeds – Best known for its fibre content and fatty acids which is great for your immune system, joint function and also brain function! Flaxseeds are also known for eliminating toxins from the body.

  • Bee Pollen - Bee Pollen is made by honeybees, and is the food of the young bee. It is considered one of nature's most completely nourishing foods as it contains nearly all nutrients required by humans. Bee-gathered pollens are rich in proteins (approximately 40% protein), free amino acids, vitamins, including B-complex, and folic acid.

Below is my breakfast this morning ...Chocolate porridge with berries and choco nutty granola sprinkled on top!

Just add raw cacao or Choc protein powder and cinnamon to your oats, cook with almond milk and cover with berries and toasted coconut nuts and seeds! Yummy and easy.. Xx
